Saint Paul Central Library

Saint Paul Central Library

Pen & Ink

2008

This grand structure is located in downtown Saint Paul.  Completed in 1916 at a cost of 1.5 million dollars, a very large sum at the time, the completed Central Library and adjoining James J. Hill Reference Library, projected confidence in the city’s future and a world-class image

A milestone for the Library came in 1945, with the establishment of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library.  Through the years, this organization has become a key partner with the City in the provision of library service, through fundraising, programming and advocacy.  The Friends is recognized as one of the best library support organizations in the nation.  Today, the Saint Paul Public Library system consists of Central Library, 12 branches, and a bookmobile.
