Bill's plans for new cafe in Opheim, Montana

June 2003

This past April Bill purchased from Opheim residents Evan & Mert Granrude 3 adjoining mains-street properties; two vacant lots and the long vacant grocery building. The grocery building has a long history, it was even a movie theatre back in the early days, in the basement Bill found several sets of theatre chairs in rather bad repair. Bill had no intention of ever buying property in town, but when Evan one day last fall brought up the subject he considered it for a few months. They talked some and a deal was struck.

Bill knew the troubled Visitor Center needed a new home, and the town could use a second café. His new property would fill both needs. Since Bill’s café project began, new owners have purchased the existing café, they are fine people and Bill wishes them well.

The photo shows how his new property appeared this past winter. Bill has created a perspective and a plan view of his vision for the property. Look closely and you can see where Bill intended to move the original Visitor Center before it was destroyed in late April, the rebuilt Center now stands upon that spot. Bill envisions a public park for the balance of the vacant lots. It will feature a small old time schoolhouse replica for kids to play school or house in, several picnic tables, and gardens filled with native grasses and wildflowers. The back of the property will be fenced off, the parks entrance will be framed by two hitch-n-posts. A windmill will become the park's centerpiece. The project will be a picturesque spot created for both local residents and visitors to the area.
