Basilica of Saint Mary
Minneapolis, Minnesota Pen and Ink - 2017
On May 31, 1908, the cornerstone was laid for the Basilica of St. Mary on land on the western edge of downtown overlooking Loring Park and Minneapolis’ major thoroughfare, Hennepin Avenue. Over 20,000 people were present. Emmanuel Masqueray, the chosen architect, had been the chief architect and designer of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Archbishop John Ireland had met Masqueray at the Fair and was impressed with his work. Masqueray simultaneously oversaw the construction of the Basilica and the Cathedral of Saint Paul - both outstanding architectural achievements of their time. On May 31, 1914, the first Mass was held in the new Minneapolis landmark.
