Majesty in Saint Paul II
Saint Paul, Minnesota - Oil on Canvas - 2005
In 1978, Saint Paul, Minnesota’s four and one-half mile Summit Avenue was proclaimed by an author as “The best preserved American example of the monumental residential boulevard.” In February, 1981 an impressed eighteen-year-old Bill Hosko moved into his first apartment several blocks from the avenue. In the late 1800’s, James J. Hill was a catalyst in the development of Saint Paul and much of the north-central and northwest regions of the United State. His home is the first and largest on the avenue. Adjacent to his thirty-two-room mansion, Hill hired Architect Clarence Johnston to build a home for his son Louis in 1902. It is the centerpiece of this painting and is affectionately referred to today as Dove Hill by its current owners Dick and Nancy Nicholson who commissioned this painting - James J. Hill’s mansion is to the right and the Cathedral of Saint Paul rises above both. (Oil high-lights added to canvas print)
