Coney Island Buildings
Saint Paul, Minnesota - Pen and Ink - 2000
Established in 1923, ‘The Original Coney Island’ was a family-owned and operated restaurant and tavern in downtown Saint Paul until 1994. Today, it is open only a select few dates annually. Why is it worth a visit, “Because it’s like walking into an Edward Hopper painting”, says Aaron Rubenstein, a historic preservation consultant and program coordinator at Historic Saint Paul. “It’s remarkably preserved, and it’s adorable, and fabulous. There’s really nothing else like it in the Twin Cities.” The two-building property has great history. One structure dates to 1858, making it the city’s oldest commercial structure. During the Civil War era it also served as an arsenal and armory. The other building, originally a saloon and hotel, dates to 1888. They were both meticulously restored in 2001.
